  • Good old fashioned value – 5/5!

We stayed for two nights during August 2014 and had a wonderful time. The hosts were friendly and they managed everything professionally. The rooms are located a few yards from the main building and are (i) lovely and quiet, (ii) very clean (iii) more spacious than the average B&B with modern bathroom facilities. We were very pleased, although the under-40s may find the fittings/furniture somewhat old-fashioned. The restaurant serves delicious food from a nicely restrained menu. I had a rare steak (always a test of the quality of the meat) and it was beautiful! We also had their packed lunches as were out walking and these, also, we’re great! If you want value for money go for it (but don’t expect high-end trendy boutique styling).

  • Wow!

The way we were treated from the moment we arrived until we left was fantastic, Elizabeth and David were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much for them. The food was great, full breakfast sets you up for the day and you could get an evening meal too if you wanted, again cooked to perfection. The quiet location was really good being relaxing and peaceful. We could not hear a sound when we went to sleep, complete opposite from where we live in a noisy town. The rooms are large and we felt we had our own little bungalow. the bed was very comfortable and the en-suite shower room, with huge double shower was great. Fantastic location for the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District, from her.,It made our four night stay great fun, with easy access to both. A dog friendly place to go and enjoy all the long short or long walks. Cant wait to go again soon, thank’s again to our hosts.

  • Good base to tour the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales

We stayed at The Head at Middleton for four nights to initially visit the Lakes, but the weather was not too kind for us. Arriving on a wet Sunday afternoon we were welcomed by Elizabeth who quickly showed us to our accommodation. All of which are in a separate building behind the actual inn. We had self catering accommodation with the option of including breakfast in the inn. The room was exactly as we had seen on the photographs. Kitchen, bedroom with double bed and 3 seater sofa and a shower room/toilet. We would have like a bigger bed, but coped. Dogs are welcome both in the rooms and the Inn itself. The breakfast was traditional but requests were always catered for. We only had one evening meal in the Inn, and Dave’s chips are worth a mention…no frozen ones here. The Inn seems popular base for walkers and access to the lovely Yorkshire Dales is only a few miles away.

Lots of interesting craft work for sale at The Head and a folk music night, which takes place some Thursdays and Fridays, was an unexpected bonus.”

  • Delightful stay

Just spent two nights whilst off roading in the area. Absolutely delightful stay – we were made to feel so welcome and special. Loved everything about The Head. Elizabeth and her staff were extremely friendly and kind to us. Our room was spotless and very comfortable and we would recommend this place to everyone for a taste of Yorkshire hospitality! Wish it could be our local! All rooms looked delightful therefore any room is recommended.

  • Best chips in Cumbria!

David’s homemade chips are legend! Lovely honest grub, traditionally presented, in cared-for premises, very quiet and homely, and Elizabeth and David are lovely and very kind. Steak and kidney pie has a lot of flavour and you get a lot of prawns in your prawn cocktail starter.

  • Lovely, quiet break

We have just spent a lovely 3 nights at The Head with our dog Lucy. Elizabeth and David were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them. It is only a short drive from the lovely village, Kirkby Lonsdale which was very dog friendly with lovely river walks. We will return.

Nothing was too much trouble for Elizabeth and David who made our three day stay very enjoyable. Clean comfortable accommodation, excellent food choices and plenty of it. Having discovered this gem of a hotel in a beautiful setting we shall return time and time again.

  • Wow! Don’t miss this gem in the wilds of Cumbria

3 tired and damp game fishermen, spending 3 days fishing in glorious Cumbria in need of TLC. We got it in shed loads. Comfortable accommodation, great food, good selection of beers, homely atmosphere, log fire and a warm welcome from Elizabeth & David who ensured all our needs were catered for, even freezing our hard fought for fish and ice packs. Thanks both for making our stay memorable and to Ruth who ensured we were well fed and watered in the Bar!

  • This is a fabulous cosy pub with excellent meals and great service

Just arrived home from spending 3 nights at The Head at Middleton. This is a fabulous cosy pub with excellent meals and great service – plus friendly locals. Elizabeth and David are The Hosts and could not do enough to please. We stayed in an annexe situated in a lovely wildlife garden, close to the pub, along with our dog Lilly.

  • First Class

My girlfriend and I have called at this lovely country pub a number of times as it is only a short drive from home and we just love it so much. It is so cosy with log fires and oak beams, the staff are so welcoming and friendly and the food is out of this world, all freshly cook to order.

    Colin, Lancaster — 22nd January, 2013
  • Excellent place to stay

Liz and David are superb hosts with nothing too much trouble, one only needs to ask. The menu at first glance does appear to be typical pub grub but there the similarity ends because the quality of the food and the cooking is certainly well above “pub grub” standard, in fact we have dined in “starred restaurants” and many times the food has been of lesser quality than at The Head. This was our first visit to the area and will not be our last, The Head will most certainly be our choice of place to stay due to its location but not least because of the warm welcome we received from Liz ,David and staff.

  • Highly recommended

Recently stayed overnight with my 3 collies and will definitely return. Made to feel very welcome, lovely rooms, dog friendly which is unusual when trying to book accommodation anywhere in the Lakes. Loved the gift shop attached to the pub as you can take away a nice souvenir of your visit.

  • The Head is to be thoroughly recommended, whether it be for a one night stopover or for a longer stay like ours.

From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome and by the end of our stay we felt more as friends than guests. Elizabeth and David could not do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and spacious, and the food excellent. We fully intend to have another break there next Spring
